Office politics

[this is good]
Oh, how this reminds me of the joys of the corporate world (and the academic world too) - your solution is about the only one, unless you did what I finally did , which was to get out whilst I still could and become my own boss. When you are self-employed, office politics are no longer an issue! ;)

In my last job, I was the "director of operations" (a title that generically meant I held the place together while the owner played in Thailand). After nine years of confusion and bewilderment, I finally came to the unbelievable conclusion that my boss (the owner) was truly the biggest liar I've ever known, and that his lies were usually about me. The owner had literally been telling most everbody under me that while he was away on his next trip, I was going to decide who should be fired. First of all, I had NO authority to make such decisions. Secondly, no conversation between myself and the owner to the effect that I'd be making such a choice or anything close to it was ever held. But alas, I couldn't get anyone to believe me.

So I decided to call the fool's bluff and, even though I'd never actually been asked to do so, made the decision of who to get rid of. I quit.

Thanks for the comments! The quitting solution sounds like a very productive one at the moment :-) The main reason why I haven't looked around for new jobs yet is that I'm getting a lot of experience in what I eventually want to do so I can one day bugger off and go freelance...
